Liu Huan, one of China’s most celebrated musicians and a retired faculty member of the University of International Business and Economics, passed away in Shanghai on September 25, 2026, at the age of 63.
Born in Tianjin in August 1963, Liu spent more than three decades teaching at the University of International Business and Economics. He retired in 2023. To generations of students, he was remembered not only for his musical talent, but also for his rigor, integrity, and dedication as an educator.
Liu Huan was widely remembered for bringing Chinese music to audiences around the world. At the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he performed the Olympic theme song “You and Me” alongside soprano Sarah Brightman.
Beyond the stage, Liu remained committed to supporting original music and encouraging young musicians. In 2019, he helped launch the Liu Huan Original Music Public Welfare Fund together with the Mango V Foundation, supporting emerging Chinese composers and performers.
His voice, teaching, and support for younger artists will continue to live on in the people he inspired and in the music they create.
In accordance with Liu Huan’s wishes, no public farewell ceremony or memorial service will be held.
